The good news: you can now replace almost every Google and Microsoft app with a European alternative, often with a free plan. Here are the best options, with country, prices and what each one replaces. Prices were checked on 3 November 2026.

For governments and large organisations
Public bodies have their own European options too: openDesk, developed for Germany's Federal Ministry of the Interior by ZenDiS, and Docs, a collaborative editor built by France's DINUM and Germany's ZenDiS. Both aim to give administrations a sovereign alternative to US cloud suites.
How to switch without the pain
Start with email
Move your email first (Proton or Tuta), then set up forwarding from your old Gmail or Outlook address for a few months so you don't miss anything.
Move files gradually
Export your Google Drive with Google Takeout or your OneDrive files, then upload to Proton Drive or Nextcloud folder by folder.
Check your AI tools too
AI assistants see a lot of personal data. If GDPR and data location matter to you, check where your assistant stores conversations and what the new EU AI Act rules require.
Our top pick
Excellent
Proton is the easiest European all-in-one switch for individuals. Organisations replacing Microsoft 365 should look at Nextcloud with Euro-Office, and everyone should try DeepL and Mistral Vibe for translation and AI.
Best for: Anyone leaving Gmail and Google Drive
